A short press conference was held this morning to kick of the planned construction for a new sight for Kankakee County Animal Control. Animal Control Director Kari Laird said the new facility on Mooney Drive in Bourbonnais is projected to hold up to 40 dogs along with an undetermined number of cats, where the current facility is only big enough for about 25 K-9’s. She says there’ll be more room for those that visit the shelter as well
Animal Control falls under the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Mike Downey said a new facility has been in the works since his office took over Animal Control about a year before COVID
County Board Chairman Andy Wheeler said the County is able to add the new facility without adding cost to County taxpayers
Wheeler said the County will use American Rescue Plan Act funds, along with 100-thousand-dollars from the State and another 100-thousand from BARK, a local group that supports animal control. Wheeler added any loans needed to complete construction would be paid for from fees and fines taken in by Animal Control. The hope is to have the new facility opened sometime in the next year.
